[Overview]
Theme for English B text
Theme for English B comprehension questions

We recently read and discussed the poem "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes. We discussed the meaning and implications of what Hughes was saying with this work. For this assignment, you will create your own version of this poem. Pretend you are sitting in that classroom with the speaker of Hughes' poem and the professor gave you the same assignment:
The instructor said....

Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you--
Then, it will be true.

Your "page" will be a statement of identity modeled after Hughes' poem in terms of content, structure, and style. Think about the poem in terms of the question that was posed to you last week "What is YOUR truth?"

[Directions]
  1. Re-read the poem "Theme for English B"
  2. Brainstorm possible ways to define your own identity, keeping in mind how the speaker of the poem defines his/her identity. Come up with as many ideas about your own identity as you can using the brainstorming method of your choice (e.g. listing, freewriting, etc). Do this brainstorming in your Writer's Notebook.
    • Title- Theme for English B brainstorming
    • Code- W 5-1
  3. In your Google Drive --> RWWS folder ---> Writing folder, create a document and title it "First Name Last Initial Theme for English B Imitation"
  4. Using the original poem as a guide, write your own poem that imitates the structure and style of "Theme for English B." It should be roughly (though not necessarily exactly) the same length, and should have a similar structure (i.e. the content should be organized in a similar way). Remember that your goal is to reveal your identity by letting your writing truly "come out of you."
  5. Once you are finished with your version, you will come up with a creative presentation for your imitation poem (W 6-1). Some suggestions are below. Feel free to branch off this list, but your idea MUST be approved by Ms. Wiltshire
    1. Create a video of you reciting your poem in a place that is significant to you and who you are.
    2. Create a video montage of images that are significant to you. Record yourself saying your poem and have that play along with your montage.
    3. Create a mural of images from your poem and incorporate the text of it within the mural.
( the main thing is that there is a creative element to how you will present your imitation to the class -- let your imagination roam!!!)
4. You will turn in your final product in your Google Drive --> RWWS folder --> Poetry (title- First Name Last Initial poetry project)
